2006, 2nd edition, 6" x 8.75", hardbound, color dust wrapper, 310 pages, black-and-white illustrations throughout.
This falconry book was written and published in the UK in 2006. This is the limited second edition of this sought after title. The subject is focused on flying Merlins on Skylarks. Aimed at specialists, it makes few concessions to non-falconers, although some followers of the other sports may find it interesting. As well as recording the fun and the food for thought that one Merlin and her fellows provided for the author and his friends, it also covers a wide range of topics, from irrelevancies such as the supposed unpalatable starlings to fundamentals like the tendency of most Merlins to give up flights without good cause. It gives some account of today's lark-hawkers, as well as of the great E.B. Michell.
"T. H. White wrote wonderful prose about the essence of falconry; such legendary hawkers as E.B. Michell and Ronald Stevens gave us insights into the birds; Now comes John Loft - poet, amateur zoologist, and living master of Merlins, who can do both. There are delights, insights, wit and wisdom on every page."
